Forestry and Parks
Notice of Intention to Amend the Boundary of the
Marshybank Ecological Reserve
(Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves, Natural Areas and Heritage
Rangelands Act)
Notice is hereby given that the Minister of Forestry and Parks is intending to amend
the boundary of Marshybank Ecological Reserve.
The proposed action is subject to Cabinet approval. If approved, the effective date of
this proposed action will be sixty days or after, from the date of this notification.
Marshybank Ecological Reserve includes a west block and an east block. The
ecological reserve is located about 90 km southwest of Edson and conserves over
800 hectares. The area includes both upper foothills natural sub-region and the alpine
and sub-alpine natural sub-regions. The intention is to amend both the west block and
east block of the Marshybank Ecological Reserve.
West block: The area covered by the west block has a double designation as both an
ecological reserve and as a wildland provincial park and is dually administered under
the Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves, Natural Areas, and Heritage Rangelands
Act and the Provincial Parks Act. The proposed amendment would deregulate the
west block from the ecological reserve and maintain its wildland provincial park
designation. The area would be solely designated as part of the Brazeau Canyon
Wildland Provincial Park.
East block: The proposed amendment would shift the location of the Marshybank
Ecological Reserve east block to be contiguous with the Brazeau Canyon Wildland
Provincial Park. This would result in an area of similar size to the existing east block
to continue to be administered as an ecological reserve. Portions of the existing east
block impact access for forestry operations within an existing Forest Management
Plan.
Collectively, these boundary amendments would result in a net increase of about 40
hectares to the total area of the provincial parks and protected areas system. This
would ensure the land base supports a clear, understandable land use system. The
proposed new area for the east block encompasses similar ecological values to the
existing area, and by making it contiguous with Brazeau Canyon Wildland Provincial
Park it would increase conservation area connectivity.
The proposed action would affect the Marshybank Ecological Reserve and Brazeau
Canyon Wildland Provincial Park, located in Townships 43-45, Ranges 19-20 West
of the 5th Meridian.

of the lands can be obtained by:

Notice of Intention to Disestablish Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve and
Establish a new Kootenay Plains Provincial Park
(Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves, Natural Areas and Heritage
Rangelands Act)
Notice is hereby given that the Minister of Forestry and Parks is intending to
disestablish the Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve and include those lands in a new
proposed Kootenay Plains Provincial Park.
The proposed action is subject to Cabinet approval. If approved, the effective date of
this proposed action will be sixty days or after, from the date of this notification.
The intention is also to disestablish the Kootenay Plains Provincial Recreation Area
and include those lands, along with bed and shore of the North Saskatchewan River
adjacent to the Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve, in a new proposed Kootenay
Plains Provincial Park.
Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve is located about 150 kilometres west of Rocky
Mountain House and encompasses over 3,400 hectares of the North Saskatchewan
river valley south of Abraham Lake. Kootenay Plains Provincial Recreation Area is
located next to Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve.
The proposed action would shift the existing hectares of land currently administered
under the Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves, Natural Areas and Heritage
Rangelands Act to the Provincial Parks Act, and result in a net increase of about 100
hectares in area to the provincial parks and protected areas system.
Some of the current uses in Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve are incompatible
with the site's current classification. The proposed action would ensure the
continuation of currently permitted activities. This aligns with the classification and
overall intent of the site while enabling better management of both recreation and
conservation outcomes.
The proposed action would affect the Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve and
Kootenay Plains Provincial Recreation Area, located in Townships 35-36, Ranges
17-18 West of the 5th Meridian.
Additional information regarding the proposed action and a detailed legal description
of the lands can be obtained by:
